Better to give than receive

The Editor, Sir:

Just a thought concerning this discussion that University of Technology (UTech) students had concerning cutting costs in the country's financial Budget.

As a retired lecturer from UTech and having authored a book titled, Responsibility, Usefulness and Graciousness, in which I put forward the concept of 'social apprenticeship' for students, I wonder if you could draw their attention to this and ask how they would see this functioning in society, not only for the present cutting of the Budget but as part of a concern for responsibility - giving to society, rather than receiving through rights and benefits such as education and health.

I am, etc.,
