At its recently held quarterly CEO breakfast, the Jamaica Employers' Federation (JEF) had much to acknowledge and celebrate. In a two-fold breakfast gathering, the organisation celebrated the National Employers' Foundation as well as the relaunch of the Executive Women's Forum.
The relaunch was certainly one of the high points on the agenda. Formed in 2006, Audrey Hinchcliffe, past president of the JEF, said certain priorities were being sidetracked for various reasons, hence the temporary halt of the forum.
However, three years after its official launch, it has now been revamped and businesswomen and executives are being urged to come on board.
With a host of benefits, Hinchcliffe said the forum serves as a vital medium for women executives. "Women tend to do things for others besides themselves. We need to have a forum to get together to discuss things that affect us, share our talent and wisdom and also to discuss certain confidential issues."
Mentality of men
In addition, she said it will help in networking, professional development, sharing creativity as well as copping unique educational opportunities among other benefits.
In reference to the mindset of men, the past president cited the difference in the mentality of men and women as it relates to joining forces. She noted that men belong to groups and gatherings, whether it be informal or otherwise; they will get together and discuss issues affecting them more than women will. The women's forum, she noted, will serve that purpose and allow women to get together in a comfortable and relaxed setting for business and personal development.
The women's group is open to executives who hold top positions in companies, varying in professions. There will be group meetings as well as an annual forum for its members.
Guest speaker at the breakfast was Senator Marlene Malahoo-Forte. Giving an inspiring presentation, Malahoo-Forte touched issues of management and leadership. In the end she challenged guests to unite with her in making Jamaica "a paradise it was intended to be" and not focus on the negatives it is often associated with.
