What next?

The Editor, Sir;

I wonder whether the proposal for an increase in bus fares is a ploy by those within the aristocratic circle to keep the downtrodden in that position? Prices keep escalating and individuals are losing their jobs left, right and centre. Now we are hit with a proposal for a hike in bus fares by the 'understanding' Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) which recently, due to its 'understanding nature', rolled back prices for the premium service it offers.

Exorbitant school fees

Also, those who traverse the halls of the University of Technology have been hit with exorbitant school fees which, in these times of uncertainty, is a hit below the belt. What is going on? Everyone keeps blaming the current global recession for all the job cuts and loss of income, but I wonder if opportunistic individuals are simply using this crisis to flex their muscles?

Are we going back to the days when only those within a certain strata of society could grace the halls of our universities? Well, it seems to me that is exactly what is taking place. If someone can provide concrete evidence to suggest otherwise, please do.

I am, etc.,
