Why not consider energy conservation?

The Editor, Sir:

There has been very little talk about energy conservation in light of our economic situation. Even though we may believe that conservation is the best approach, we might be missing another vital part being more energy efficient.

Energy conservation focuses on how much energy is consumed. Energy efficiency focuses on how much energy is used relative to the services demanded. However, in my opinion, there are no alternatives that can replace efficiency. Therefore, we have got to get used to using energy more efficiently.

If you cut back on your energy usage, you will certainly notice a change on your bill but not necessarily in your overall lifestyle. There are many personal benefits as a result of conservation that would certainly have a positive impact on the country. At home, one can look at conservation methods and enforcing them.

Consider using fluorescent bulbs, which provide more light and burns less electricity.

Consider using gas rather than electricity to cook.

Consider fans rather than air-conditioning.

If the circumstances require air-conditioning, consider switching it off when not required.

The Government should also look at regulating the importation of vehicles fitted with V8 and V6 engines. These vehicles use a lot of fuel and half the time, these vehicles are only used for pleasure. Government should also consider looking at import policy on light bulbs and consider importing only energy-efficient light bulbs. An energy conservation education programme would certainly create the framework that would drive a successful implementation on an energy policy.

As a nation, we must explore the possibility of alternative sources of energy. Solar generators and wind turbines are costly set-ups but over time, they are very good investments. Although a generator is considered dependable, there is also the maintenance cost associated with its optimum performance.
