'Stammering' news
Published: Tuesday | August 25, 2009
THOUGH I have been greatly helped by speech therapy after arriving in the United States from Jamaica in 1989, I still consider myself a person who stammers. Therefore, I was thrilled to read your article 'Who am I? From stammering kid to dancehall star, Beenie Man reveals a different side' about Moses 'Beenie Man' Davis. After so many years of hearing his music played by my family members I never knew about his stammering.
A non-profit organisation called The Stuttering Foundation (www.stutteringhelp.org) has a list of famous people who stammer on their website, which includes singers who, like Beenie Man, began singing to free them from their stammering. One of them is Carly Simon. Others on the list are Bruce Willis, Julia Roberts, James Earl Jones, Marilyn Monroe and Winston Churchill.

I would also like to give some information to people who stammer as well as the parents of children who stammer. The website of the Stuttering Foundation has many free resources such as streaming videos and brochures that can be down loaded.
One per cent of the worldwide adult population stammers while four per cent of children show signs of stammering in the early years. Seventy-five per cent of these stammering kids stop stammering. Experts agree that early intervention with speech therapy is the best thing for a child who stammers. The population of Jamaica is 2,826,00: this means that there are more than 28,000 adults who stammer in Jamaica.
