Move to open anti-abortion home

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE DAWN Caribbean Working Group on Women's Reproductive Health and Rights welcomes the move by the Missionaries of the Poor to establish a home which will provide alternatives for pregnant women who are considering abortion.

According to a report in The Gleaner of August 19, the new facility will be able to accommodate some 400 women and children, providing women with a comfortable alternative should they choose to give birth.

Optimum outcome

In all cases, the optimum outcome is for women to have access to supportive and nurturing environments which would accommodate them in making wise choices about how to manage their pregnancies.

While the Working Group recognises that not every woman will choose to follow through with an unplanned or unwanted pregnancy, it affirms that whenever there exists a broader range of safe and non-judgmental reproductive health choices for women, then it is, indeed women, their families and wider communities that benefit.
