As the race drew nigh, everything stopped and all eyes were on the television set. The children, who were in attendance at the Kingston Eastern Police Back-to-School Treat abandoned the various games they were engaged in.
They all came running and jostled for positions in front of the television. Some children shouted "a Mullings wi seh", but as soon as Usain Bolt's face was shown on the screen, there were screams everywhere.
Those screams were sustained for 19.19 seconds and most of the children lingered long after the conclusion of the race to watch the replay over and over again and talk among themselves about the greatness of the man.
"Mi proud a him! Mi feel glad to be a Jamaican," said 13-year-old Jovaughn Mceceachron.
"I am not into track and field but I would consider it based on how well the Jamaicans are doing," added Jovaughn.
When asked which of the races stood out to him, he said the 100m for men because Bolt broke his own record and set a new one.
Irvin Jackson, in anticipation of history being made, brought his Jamaican flag to the treat.
"I travelled with my flag as I planned on watching di Bolt race fi si if him did a go set a next record and him never disappoint mi. The word nuh design inna di dictionary yet fi describe how mi feel," said Irvin.
He, however, pointed out that the Melaine Walker race stood out to him the most.
"The way she reacted and her determination at the end, I feel real proud," he concluded.
Celebration mode
Kareen Forbs was still in celebration mode when The Gleaner spoke to her.
"Mi feel good, very good tuh. But mi know he already won the race before the race started," she declared.
When asked how it made her feel to be a Jamaican, she announced, "Mi feel proud, very proud to, despite all the violence that's going on this make yuh have a different feeling."
Corporal Oneil Patterson said that he was "proud to be a Jamaican. For the fastest man in world to be from Jamaica is just simply amazing".
His sentiments were shared by Venissa Foster, who pointed out that Bolt never fails to amaze her.
"Lawd God! It feels great to know that a Jamaican has this record that him alone can break," Cadene Barnett pointed out.
