While numbering just four, they erupted like a 50-man choir around the television as the starter's gun set things in motion for the women's 100-metres final at the World Championships in Berlin, Germany.

"Run! Go Kerron! Go!" and "Yeah, you can do it!" were the lyrics of the choir's 11-second rendition.

Somewhat disappointed, the sister of Kerron Stewart, Tamis Chambers, aunt, Claudette Peart, cousin, Jody Gray, and best friend, Orlando Barnett, could do nothing but settle for the silver medal Kerron - lovingly called Stewie - will add to her list of accomplishments.

Barnett, Stewie's best friend from her days at St Jago High School, left work early to watch the race with her family at Service Park in Glendale.

"I am overly confident that she (Stewie) will win, though there is still a lot of anxiety and nervousness," said Barnett, as he tried to explain his emotions minutes before the race.

The pride that filled the room did not diminish after the race, though the disappointment at seeing Stewie cross the finish line second was obvious.

"I am still proud of Stewie," said Chambers.

"I still feel proud, though I wanted her to win," Peart joined in.

Text messages

No doubt, Stewie's mother, Winnifred Carnegie, would have loved to see her taking home the gold.

"I am very proud of her. I sent her a couple of text messages before the race telling her to keep focused and look forward to the gold," she said.

"I still give God thanks for what she has accomplished."

Stewart clocked 10.75 to finish behind countryman and gold medallist Shelly-Ann Fraser, who clocked a national record of 10.73 seconds.
