Aiken on fire

AVARUA, Cook Islands (CMC):

Led by world-class shooter Romelda Aiken, Jamaica steamrolled the United Stats of America (USA) 108-11 to record one of the most massive victories, while their Caribbean colleagues Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago were beaten at the 2009 World Youth Netball Championship (WYNC) on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-5-inch Aiken netted 81 goals in the Jamaicans' lopsided win in the Pool D fixture at the new Tereora Multi Purpose Sporting Complex on the first full day of competition in the global event for Under-21 netballers.

They were the only Caribbean winners on opening day as reigning champions New Zealand flattened Barbados 102-24 and Northern Ireland edged Trinidad and Tobago 45-43 in two Pool A matches.

The Jamaicans, who finished fourth at the last championship, 2005 in Florida, were never threatened as they used long, high passes to Aiken, who dwarfed her opposing defenders and scored with monotonous regularity.

Missed shots

Aiken, who was earlier this summer named MVP for the second year in a row in the prestigious ANZ Championship in New Zealand and Australia, missed nine shots.

The Jamaica captain Christine Solmon hit 22 goals from 23 attempts. Taneisha Morrison (7/11) led the USA's scoring.

In other matches on Day One, former champions Australia beat South Africa 73-22 and Fiji beat Samoa 57-43 in Pool C, England crushed Vanuatu 110-9 and hosts Cook Islands beat Malaysia 70-36 in Pool B, and Singapore beat Papua New Guinea 61-23 in Pool D.
