Abortion and our spiritual leaders

THE EDITOR, Sir:

LET ME put in my small piece on the issue of abortion. As one who had an abortion over 40 year ago, I am forever haunted by my child who could have been whatever he could have been.

The state can decide on abortion or not, but it is the spiritual leaders of this country who are to be held responsible for every abortion that has ever taken place. They have abdicated their responsibility to the state. Where were you church leaders when these helpless souls came into the world to women who were unable to cope, to teenagers who don't think beyond tomorrow, to women outside of the Church who didn't know who or where to turn to? To this day, where were you?

Guardians of the souls

The state can do anything, but the Church and its leaders are the guardians of the souls sent to Earth by God. Where then, spiritual leaders is your presence on this issue, in the streets in the schools, in the clinic and doctors' offices? The churches should have small offices or a desk on every street corner, there should be church orphanages on every streets, there should be church counsellors available to non-churchgoers anonymously.

There should be billboards and posters telling women where to go for help just as our business advertise condoms. We, women, are in need of financial, emotional and spiritual guidance at these times. God, I believe gave this responsibility to our church leaders so that abortion and care would be their option. And it would not be so easy for women to make this choice.

Leave the state to decide as it sees fit on abortion. You spiritual leaders take care of God's people and they will never turn to the state to make a decision for them about an unborn soul. Instead, you will be there to catch God's children as they tumble into this world.

I am, etc.,
