WESTERN BUREAU:

Just hours after the end of Reggae Sumfest 2009 last Sunday morning, a group of patriots was roasting corn, breadfruit, yam and salt fish in the backyard of Godfrey and Odette Dyer's Ironshore home in Montego Bay.

For the party, labelled 'Ole Time Sumpting Come Back Again', Odette Dyer and her western Jamaica Visual Impact Committee had commenced the celebration of Jamaica's 47th year of Independence, by taking their guests down memory lane in true island style.

The dress code said: 'the colours of the Jamaican flag', and those who could, donned the black, green and gold.

But it was the red herring, the tasty ackee and salt fish/corned pork, mackerel run down, stew peas and pigstail, escoveitch fish and curried goat that took centre stage. Accompanying these favourites were blue drawers (duckunoo) and sweet potato pudding.

Bankra of goodies

The food was complemented by a bankra (basket) packed with naseberry, sweetsop and mango, and tables laden with coconut drops, grater cake, gizzadas, tamarind ball and jackass corn. Wash that down with some home-made rum punch, ginger beer and lemonade.

As if those were not enough for one afternoon, the enamel mugs on the table brought back the beautiful memories of steaming chocolate tea.

Ole Time Sumpting was a hit with guests including: Paula and Mark Kerr-Jarrett, Winston and Denise Dear, Dr Horace Chang and wife Paulette, Mayor Charles Sinclair, George Thomas, Courtney Hamilton and Judy Farmer, Cecil Bird, Karen Neita, Nicollette Mudie, Taniesha Salmon, Lorna Johnson, Jackie Bird, Percy and Mureen Clarke, Glennette Campbell, Sandra Martin, Jasmine Tomlinson-Brown and husband Owen, Lee-Anne and Johnny Gourzong, Beverly and Robert Russell, April and Seymour Parchment, Patrick Williams and former runners-up in the Digicel Rising Stars One Third, who performed for the guests.
