OCHO RIOS, ST Ann: Governor General Sir Patrick Allen has underscored the importance of lifelong learning as a means to overcoming the country's economic crisis.

Speaking at the first ever St Ann Senior Citizens quiz final, held at Sandals Dunn's River Wednesday evening, the governor general said young people would need significantly more opportunities to expand the country's productive base and this was where life-long learning was important.

The governor general cited the senior citizens as examples of how lifelong learning could be used effectively, and described them as proud examples to the young people of today.

Meanwhile, the St Ann Senior Citizens Council held the first ever senior citizens' quiz, with the Claremont chapter (renamed Claremont Elementary) going up against the Brown's Town chapter (Brown's Town Elementary) in a Schools' Challenge format to decide championships honours.

Brown's Town emerged winners 60-54 in a closely fought contest.

The seniors played the roles of students, the ladies were dressed as young school girls in tunics and blouses with matching ribbons, Brown's Town in blue and Claremont in green. The men donned short khaki pants.

early lead

It was Claremont that took the early lead, rushing to an 18-16 lead at the end of the first of three rounds. Questions were fielded from several categories including history and geography, English, bible know-ledge and general knowledge.

In the speed section, Claremont increased the lead, emerging 42-34 at the break.

Brown's Town appeared to have been saving the best for last and, during the buzzer section, hardly gave quiz master, Ian Spencer, Sandals' Regional press relations manager, time to finish the question before pouncing.

The team rallied well to emerge 60-54 winners.
