LETTER OF THE DAY - WI cricket needs complete overhaul

Published: Sunday | July 19, 2009

The Editor, Sir:

The current West Indies cricket impasse is the result of a board with an old-fashioned style of management and ignorant egos destroying a group of modern, talented players instead of motivating them!

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) should be held accountable for not only what has taken place recently, but for what has taken place with West Indies cricket over the last decade.

Incumbent president, Dr Julian Hunte, is nothing but an embarrassment and demotivator to West Indies cricket. What is needed for the future of West Indies Cricket is an entirely new council. Forget about only firing the board if the policies will remain. We need a completely new forum, with members who are passionate about West Indies cricket, full of motivation and can manage a sporting team in today's high-paced, high-stressed, technologically advanced environment.

It's time for change. We have changed coaches, players, captains, and we've pointed fingers. But the board and its policies have always remained. We now need to form an entirely new council with fresh board members and newly written policies that can complement the players of 2009 and not those of 1979.

I am, etc.,
