Jamaica, yesterday, pulled themselves back into contention for the three-day TCL Group WICB U-19 Cup when they recorded an emphatic nine-wicket win over Guyana at Sabina Park.

Jamaica, who lost their opening encounter by an innings and 64 runs to title challengers Trinidad and Tobago, rallied to post their first win of the six-team round-robin championship. They reached 82-1 in late afternoon after being set a victory target of 79 by the visitors.

Guyana, who were suffering their second defeat in as many matches, had earlier made 210 in their second innings to go with their first-innings total of 160. Jamaica, in their first innings, made 292-7 declared.

Kingston College leg-spinner Akeem Dewar, who was invited to the national senior team trials earlier this season, was named man of the match after top scoring with 70 not out in Jamaica's first innings and taking four wickets, two in each of Guyana's innings.

Good team victory

"It was a good team victory after the Kensington loss," said Dewar. "The guys put their heart in and it paid off. As it relates to the man of the match, it is good to know that the hard work and perseverance that I have put in is paying off," he added.

Jamaica, who will next turn their attention to the Leewards at Melbourne Oval, starting tomorrow, moved to 12 points with the victory and into third position, 12 behind leaders Leewards and Trinidad and Tobago, who also won outright.

The Leewards registered an epic come-from-behind four-wicket win over defending champions Barbados at Elletson Road, while Trinidad and Tobago outclassed the Windwards by eight wickets at Jamaica Broilers Group Oval.

Guyana, four points, and the Windwards, zero, round off the point standings.

In yesterday's Sabina battle, Jamaica were able to restrict the Guyanese thanks to St Elizabeth Technical High School pacer Nicholson Gordon who claimed 3-60; Dewar, 2-46; and Eltham High's Romeo Dunka, 2-44.

They then raced to their victory target courtesy of West Indies Under-15 opener, Tacky High's John Campbell, who made 42 not out, and his opening partner, Manchester High's Brian Clarke, who made 13.
