Hot battles loom for U-16, U-18 titles

Sheldon McIntosh and Joseph Ross will meet in both finals of the Pan Caribbean Bank All-Jamaica Under-18 and Under-16 Junior Singles final Championships at the Eric Bell Centre today.

McIntosh, who is seeded at four in the Under-18 tournament, recorded a hard-fought come-from-behind 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Lawrence Salmon in the semi-finals to book is place in the final. The righted-handed McIntosh, who is the number-one seeded player in the Under-16 competition, had an easy 6-1, 6-2 over Simon Levy to reach that final.

Despite his confident play, McIntosh said he is expecting a tough time in both finals.

"You can expect some good tennis from me and, hopefully, I can come out with the win," said McIntosh.

"I am very confident because I know I have the game to beat him. We have played a few times before and we have beaten each other, so I definitely think that I can come out with the win."

On the other hand, Ross, who is unseeded in the boys' Under-18 singles, defeated the number two-ranked Camarsh Crumbie 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 to secure his place in the final.

Ross, who is ranked fifth in the Under-16 singles, stopped the third-seeded Oshane Trail 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 to reach his second final.

Ross said he is very optimistic about his chances in both finals.

"I am very confident because I have been playing my best tennis," said Ross. "I will be playing a person that I am used to playing against a lot and I know how he plays, so it will be fun."

It will also be a similar affair on the girls' side, as Neeah Rose and Shantal Blackwood will contest both the Under-18 and Under-16 finals.

The 12-year-old Rose, who is considered one of Jamaica's brightest young prospects, secured her place in the final girls' Under-18 final with a comfortable 6-4, 6-1 win over Simone Vranov-Brown and a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Shelita Haughton to book her place in the Under-16 final.

Rose said she is confident of a victory in both finals.

"I feel good about my two finals tomorrow. I think that I can beat my opponent because I have played her before and I have beaten her," said Rose.

Meanwhile, Blackwood defeated Sicquena Sinclair 7-6 (3), 6-1 to reach the Under-18 final and she then had an exciting 7-6 (4), 7-5 victory over Lauren Vranov-Brown to secure her spot in the Under-16 final.

"I am going out there with a good strategy because I know that it might be a bit windy and so I am going there to be consistent, keep the ball going, not to go for too much shots and just do my best," said Blackwood.

Alex Anderson and Daniel Harris will meet in the boys' Under-14 final, while Michael Ann Denton and Shadae Findlay will face each other in the girls' equivalent.
