Phillips wins again

NATIONAL 400 metres hurdles champion Isa Phillips and sprinter Steve Mullings continued their build-up to the August 15-23 IAAF World Championships with victories in Madrid, Spain, yesterday.

There were runner-up spots for Danny McFarlane, Ainsley Waugh and Maurice Wignall.

Phillips who, a week ago, dethroned McFarlane in the men's 400m hurdles to capture his first title at the National Senior Champion-ships, posted another excellent time of 48.09 seconds to win the event. Like he did at the National Championships, McFarlane had to settle for second in a respectable 48.53 seconds.

Mullings, who finished fifth in the 100 metres at the National Championships, proved best among the males in the short sprint by clocking 10.11 seconds in a negative wind of 1.9 metres per seconds. His countryman, Ainsley Waugh, won race two in 10.40 seconds to be fifth overall on time.

pet event

After regaining his 110 metres hurdles title at the recent National Championships, the veteran Wignall clocked 13.62 seconds for the runner-up spot in his pet event as American Joel Brown won in a 13.59.

National champion Trecia Smith had to settle for fifth in the women's triple jump with a wind-aided 14.68 metres (3.8mps). Veteran Tatyana Lebedeva of Russia won with a leap of 15.01 metres in a positive wind reading of 4.5 metres per second.
