Jovanee Jarrett hit top form on the first day of the National Senior Championships on Friday when she took the women's long jump with an impressive leap of 6.75m.

Jarrett, who entered the competition with a 'B' standard of 6.66m, improved on her previous jump to an 'A' ranking and thus has automatically qualified for the national team to the August 15-23 IAAF World Championships in Berlin.

"My previous best of 6.66m was not good so I am happy with the result," Jarrett said. "I came out here today to go over 6.70m and I did exactly that, so I am extremely happy," she said.

Jarrett, who won ahead of Yushanni Durrant, 6.10m, and Rochelle Farquharson, 5.90m, said her aim for the season was to set her own personal record.

She anticipates that she will make the top 12 in Berlin and make it into the finals. The 2005 Southeastern Conference indoor long jump champion is confident she will be among the medals if she makes it to the final.

"I will probably be on the medal stand, who knows?" Jarrett said.

Jarrett had set her sights on the Central American and Caribbean Championships in Havana, Cuba, next month but now she is not so sure after her big performance on Friday. Now she wants track and field enthusiasts to focus more on field event athletes and give them support.

"Seeing that we are doing our best and trying to be recognised, people can give us more support like they give the other athletes on the track," Jarrett said.
