LIME, Digicel win in KO cricket

Communications giants, LIME and Digicel won their opening round matches in the Business House cricket series Best Dressed Chicken 30-over KO competition last Sunday.

At Jamalco in Clarendon, LIME defeated Jamalco by 59 runs.

Batting first, LIME were dismissed for 184 off 29.2 overs - Marvin Lobban 58, national player Yannick Elliott 37, former Jamaica under-19 player Andrew McCarthy 24 and another national player, Horace Miller 17; Derrick Spence taking 4-22, Devon Gordon 3-14.

Jamalco 125 off 26.5 overs - Winston 'Sala' Osbourne 45, Barrington Brown 34; Elliott 3-13, Melbourne Super League player Dave Johnson 2-29.

AT KENSINGTON PARK: Digicel defeated National Continental Baking Company by 203 runs. Digicel 286 for six, thanks to a century (109) by middle-order batsman Garfield Moore, who received good support from Hanif Palmer 46 and Shamar Anderson 32; Roland Henry 2-52, Nyron Morrison 2-56.

In reply, National Continental Baking Company were skittled out for 83 - Ramon Senior 20, Odain Bartley 17; Anderson 3-14.

The other scheduled match between NWC and Sagicor at Chalmers Avenue was rained out and has been rescheduled.

Business House cricket takes a break today for the playing of the second one-day international between West Indies and India at Sabina Park. The Digicel 20/20 competition will begin next Sunday, July 5.

Gleaner beat Courts 3-1

The Gleaner won their first match in Division I of the KSAFA/ Western Sports Business House competition last Monday when they defeated Courts 3-1 in second-round action at the NWC playing field, Mona.

Courts surprised the 'newsmen' when Ricardo Lesceen broke loose and shot past goalkeeper Everdeen Scarlett in the first minute.

However, Gleaner rebounded with goals from Keiron Brock (32nd minute), Marvin 'Buddy Boy' Stewart on the stroke of half-time and Kemel Mullings in the 71st minute to seal the issue. Courts' lethal striker, Locksley Thompson, who was last season's leading scorer in the Super League while representing Cavalier, was effectively marked out of the game by the Gleaner defenders Bernard Blackwood and Rudolph Speid, his Cavalier teammates.

In other matches, Jamaica National Building Society and NWC played to a goalless draw, while Scotiabank clipped Courts 1-1 on June 20 with a late goal from Stephan Barclay.

In Division II, GraceKennedy beat Wisynco 2-1, thanks to a double strike from Damian Rankin, while Petrojam and Nubian Construction drew 2-2.

Meanwhile, the first big clash in Division I of the competition takes place tomorrow with Gleaner up against defending champions Carib Cement in the feature third round match at Winchester Park (St George's College) starting at 4 p.m.

This is a virtual replay of last year's final which saw Carib Cement coming from behind to clip Gleaner 3-2 in extra time.

Scotiabank on top in netball

Scotiabank 'A' and 'B' are both unbeaten in three matches in the Jamaica Netball Association Open League competition after three rounds of matches. Hot favourites Scotiabank 'A' with current and former national players Nichala Gibson, Naudia Brown, Kameika Sherwood, Andrea Markland and Marsha Murphy in their line-up, drubbed JUTC 55-5 at the Leila Robinson Courts on Tuesday, while on Saturday, June 20, they crushed Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica 61-1. The 'A' team also beat ICD by a wide margin in an earlier match.

Meanwhile, Scotiabank 'B' defeated Jamaica Infrastructure Operators 21-13 on Tuesday at the Leila Robinson Courts with Christina Morgan getting 19 goals. The 'B' team had earlier beaten Guardian Life and VMBS.

The only other unbeaten team in the league is Jamaica Broilers, who crushed Pan Caribbean 52-5 on Tuesday.

In other matches played last Tuesday, NCB whipped Transport Authority 22-1, JF Mills beat Juici Patties 17-6, ATL Group defeated VMBS 19-13, RBTT beat JNBS 22-8, JPS got by Gleaner 17-8, Bureau of Standards stopped Cool Petroleum 26-16, HEART Trust/NTA drubbed Wray & Nephew 24-4, Sagicor beat SERHA 20-16, Housing Agency of Jamaica crushed Norman Manley International Airport 20-3, NHT beat Digicel 21-14, ICD Group defeated NEM Insurance 27-12, Jamaica Business Development Centre clipped GraceKennedy 21-17, NWC beat Guardian Life 17-13 and BH Paints stopped JUTC 21-14.

Four advance in domino KO

Berger, Port Authority, Premix and Companies of Jamaica have secured semi-final spots in the JET-sponsored Business House KO domino competition after the second round of matches at the National Housing Trust car park on Friday Night.

Results of the matches played are as follows: Premix defeated Jamaica Brandy 69-56, Port Authority whipped Carib Cement 75-44, Companies of Jamaica clipped National Baking Company 65-64, Sagicor pipped Marksman 62-61, Pepsi nipped Airports Authority 75-74 and Berger beat National Housing Trust 72-58.

In the quarter-finals, Premix defeated Pepsi 72-67, Companies of Jamaica beat Sagicor 74-53 and Berger clipped Port Authority 74-73 after both played to a 73-73 tie in regulation time. In the extra game played, Berger came out on top to advance to the semis, but Port Authority by virtue of being the best losers, have also advanced.

The draw for next Friday's semis at the JPS Sports Club will see Berger up against Companies of Jamaica and Premix vs Port Authority

Two wins each for NWC, JDF

The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), Bank of Jamaica (BoJ) and National Water Commission (NWC) all recorded two wins as action in both the mixed and male divisions of the Reggae Jammin Business House volleyball league continued at the UWI Gymnasium last Sunday.

In the first match, BoJ defeated UWI 2-0 in the mixed division, NWC beat Guardian Life 'B' 2-0 in another mixed match. In the male division, JDF defeated BoJ 2-0. NWC got their second win of the day defeating AMECO 2-0 in the male division, while the JDF also notched their second win, tagging UWI 2-0 in a mixed division match.

In the final game of the day, BoJ clipped Guardian 'A' 2-1 in an exciting mixed encounter. The JDF lead both divisions. They have nine points in the male division, two more than BoJ, followed by NWC on five and AMECO on three. The JDF have 15 points in the mixed division, UWI nine, NWC eight, BoJ seven, Guardian 'A' six and Guardian 'B' three.
