Lyssons are MajorLeague champs

Lyssons defeated arch-rivals and the consistent Prospect 1-0 at the York Oval last weekend to lift The Captain's Bakery/St Thomas Major League football title.

By virtue of winning the com-petition, the beaten mid-season finalists earned the right to play off for a spot in the Eastern Confederation Super League.

Kareem King's 69th-minute free kick from just outside the area was the difference between the teams in a game that was dubbed the border clash.

Interestingly, Prospect defeated Lyssons 2-1 and 3-1 in two rounds of the preliminary fixture, maintaining dominance over the champions in recent time.

Lyssons have won this competition for the second time having been crowned champions back in the 1992/93 season, when the competition was sponsored by Goodyear.

Captain Horace Burrell, who presented the trophy to Fitzroy McCalla the captain of Lyssons, said he was pleased with overall organisation of the league and committed to the continuation of the sponsorship in St Thomas for as long as it is possible. He, however, pointed out that the commitment to the sponsorship is being done notwithstanding the global economic challenges as his company is committed to the development of local football.

Oracabessa thrash Mason Hall

Defending champions Oracabessa beat Mason Hall Primary 4-0 in action from the Island Trust primary school football championship played on Thursday at the Eden Park Complex in Jacks River, St Mary.

It was the wily midfielder Khori McKenzie who opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a powerhouse shot from the edge of the 18-yard-box.

The score was doubled four minutes later when Santanna Marks fired home from point-blank range. Marks then completed a brace when he found the back of the net in the 24th minute from a goalmouth mêlée.

Oracabessa's other goal came in the 29th minute from a well taken free kick by captain Chelsea McDonald to seal the issue. The Mason Hall team was held at bay through stout goalkeeping by Damali Brown who pulled off numerous saves to deny their opponent any scoring opportunity.

On the basketball court, the Oracabessa primary boys stayed on course for defending the coveted basketball title by handing Iona Preparatory their first defeat 19-10. Roschel Patterson led the way for the winners with 10 points from 15 attempts.

Sunrise lift Division Two title

Sunrise surprised Heartease to lift the Dr Fenton Ferguson-sponsored St Thomas Division Two trophy at Cotton Tree in Port Morant last weekend.

The victory gave them an automatic berth in the Major League next season and $30,000.

Sunrise withstood all that Heartease threw at them and completed the job with a 3-2 victory.

Despite the rain and the muddy condition, which it left, spectators throughout the parish packed into the small venue to witness the much-anticipated final.

Sunrise went ahead from as early as the 11th minute as captain Junior Beckford's well-taken header secured the game's opening goal.

Substitute Kemar Barrett found the equaliser for Heartease in the 66th minute from another well-taken header as the ball eluded the keeper in the back of the net to make it 1-1.

Sunrise, despite been reduced to 10 players, went ahead when Miquelnique Lawrence scored, but it was not until when Alex McPherson squeezed a nicely taken header into the back of the net that the celebration started.

Heartease fought back but were only rewarded with a penalty three minutes into stoppage time, which was converted by Gregory Miller.
