Madrid job 'interesting'

PARIS (AP):

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that coaching Real Madrid would be "obviously interesting for any coach".

Florentino Perez announced his candidacy last week to become Madrid president for a second time in the club's elections in the off season. He reportedly tried to sign Wenger during his first stint and has been linked again with the Arsenal manager.

"With Perez, the project will be obviously interesting for any coach," Wenger told French TV on Sunday. Asked whether he would be tempted, he replied: "I'm a coach."

Wenger, who says he will stay at Arsenal at least until his contract expires in 2011, wouldn't reveal if he'd been in contact with Perez.

"Allow me to remain discreet on that matter," Wenger said.

Bridgmohan scores

MIAMI, Florida (CMC):

Jamaican jockey Jermaine Bridgmohan notched his seventh added-money triumph of the season when he guided the favourite Garter Belt to a fine front-running victory in the Regal Gal Stakes at Calder on Saturday afternoon. A 3-to-5 favourite in the six-horse field, Garter Belt won the US$55,000 event over a mile and 70 yards by 1-1/4 lengths in one minute 46.44 seconds.

Bridgmohan, whose older brother Shaun dominated at Churchill Downs Saturday with three wins, posted one of three Jamaican wins on Calder's 12-race card Saturday as Wesley Henry posted a double.

W Connection win

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):

The Dominican Republic's Jonathan Frias hit a brace and fired W Connection to a 2-1 victory over Puerto Rico Islanders in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship final on Sunday night. Frias scored twice in the first 21 minutes and Pablo Nunez scored in the 36th minute for the PR Islanders, at Marvin Lee Stadium.

T&T's San Juan Jabloteh beat Haiti's Tempete 2-1 in the third-place play-off to join W Connection and PR Islanders as CFU qualifiers for the CONCACAF Champions League. Cyrano Glen (33rd) and Elton John (44th) sent Jabloteh 2-0 ahead by half-time and Jabloteh held on for the victory although Karlon Murray netted an own goal to reduce the deficit.

The result gave T&T two teams in the Champions League field and brings to 14 the number of teams confirmed for the 24-club series, which will begin July 28 with the first leg of the preliminary round.

Sharapova returns

WARSAW, Poland (AP):

Maria Sharapova played her first tour singles match in nearly 10 months yesterday, beating Tathiana Garbin of Italy 6-1, 6-7 (6), 6-3 in the first round of the Warsaw Open. The Russian, who last played a singles match in August after being sidelined with a torn rotator cuff in her right shoulder, wore a bandage on her shoulder.

The three-time Grand Slam tournament winner and former No. 1 player wasted three match points in the second set. Currently ranked No. 126, Sharapova had played one doubles match since August.
