Brilliant Bravo whips Merry Boys

POINTE-A-PIERRE, Trinidad (CMC):

Young West Indies batsman Darren Bravo produced a devastating display of batting to propel Queen's Park to the capture of the WIPA Twenty20 Club Champions League on Sunday night.

The 20-year-old left-handed Bravo slammed 75 from a mere 33 balls as Queen's Park beat local club Merry Boys by 33 runs at Guaracara Park in the final of the US$100,000 tournament.

Bravo, the younger brother of West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, smashed seven sixes and a four to take centre stage at the South Trinidad ground.

In one over he struck off-spinner Aneil Kanhai, the Merry Boys captain, for four sixes and a four.

Sent in to bat, Queen's Park rattled up 199 for four and Merry Boys could only manage 166 for nine from their 20 overs.

Decision almost backfired

Merry Boys' decision to bowl first almost backfired as openers Justin Guillen and Runako Morton added 73 off 51 balls for the first wicket.

Morton, scheduled to leave yesterday to join the West Indies one-day squad, cracked 53 off 47 balls with three fours and a six while Guillen made 31 off 22 balls with two fours and a six. Keiron Pollard finished undefeated on 18 off 14 balls, as Queen's Park raised the highest score of the tournament.

Merry Boys started their run chase impressively, with Barbadian Alcindo Holder and Mario Belcon posting 45 for the first wicket off just 27 balls. Holder fell for 34 off 19 balls with six fours to spark a decline for Merry Boys as they lost their next six wickets for just 40 runs in the space of 35 balls, to collapse to 85 for seven.

Thereafter, only Kenneth Hazel with 35 from 24 balls showed any resistance as out-of-favour West Indies off-spinner Amit Jaggernauth grabbed three for 14 and Sunil Narine two for 29, to destroy the innings.
