A threat to public order

Published: Tuesday | May 12, 2009

The Editor, Sir:

Any threat of protest or strike by members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force at a time like this should be seen as a breach of public order and an agitation against the constituted authority of the State.

Emergency services and the police should not have the right to strike at a time like this and, if army personnel were to threaten strike action, the soldiers would be charged with sedition, the same should be the case with any public service where public safety and security would be threatened if they were to take strike action when there is no money to pay for any salary increases.

The public's security should come first before any strike. The Jamaican police cannot use strike action to hold the Government to ransom. A rolling pay deal would be great for all public servants in Jamaica - if the Government could afford it. The police should stop trying to tie the Government's hands and help the Government to be productive against real crime, drugs, guns, vice and organised crime in Jamaica.
