Coping with hard times

During these hard times, we can take a moment to regroup, plan and develop new strategies for a lifetime of success. Do not waste a good recession; this is actually the best time for training and establishing several skills. Millionaires have been made during times like this; be on the front-end and when this period is over, you will be on your way to a solid future. Financial freedom, peace of mind and good health are all vital when pursuing a balanced life.

It is a fact that we are experiencing longevity in this era more than in previous generations. As a result, the Government, along with the private sector, should continue to improve medical facilities, infrastructure and recreation for all age groups. Job creation and retention are crucial for the younger generation, including recent college graduates, as Jamaica strives to maintain a balanced growth.

Tips for coping

1. Listen to experts and apply the advice of others who have walked the path.

2. It is not necessary to have a personal experience to learn a life lesson; you can learn from the mistakes of others. This can be a fast track on the road to creation of wealth.

3. Empower yourself with positive thoughts and focus on the positive aspects of your life.

As the demographics change in Jamaica and the numbers of mature citizens continue to grow, we also have to plan for retirement options as the island charts a path for all groups. Housing, transportation, health care and general assistance from the private and public sectors are important. Earl Moore, president and CEO of Guardian Life, developed a number of insurance plans which allow clients to save on a monthly basis, through salary or bank deductions. In addition, according to Moore, "At Guardian Life, clients have the opportunity to accumulate savings in either interest sensitive or segregated funds." Productive connectivity between these entities will continue to improve the standard of life for all Jamaicans.

Meaningful collaboration

Furthermore, meaningful collaboration between Jamaicans who live abroad, who share the same mission, goodwill and interests as those who are currently living in Jamaica, is crucial to the success of our beautiful homeland. Including all stakeholders in the further development of Jamaica is a formula that could lead to useful findings. According to one of our successful caribbean leaders, Edward Layne, Barbadian consul in Atlanta, "In addition to the banking system, the hospitality industry, particularly tourism, could benefit significantly from the millions of Jamaicans and friends of Jamaica who reside outside of the island. The secret is to know the value in having millions of supportive people with a common mission."

Financial freedom is a worthwhile goal, however, good health, genuine friendships and spiritual fulfilment are all important as we try to establish 'The What What What Approach to success' - What you do with what you have determines what you become.

Remember, keep the focus on what you do have in your life.
