Fixing a broken house
Published: Tuesday | April 21, 2009
I had been searching for the perfect house to rent for the last 18 and a half years and I finally found it. The lawns are well manicured but the house itself needs some fixing - but nothing I can't handle. I have done this before and enjoy the challenge.
We moved in over two months ago and I began renovation, but the extent of the damage is far more than I expected. But I am a proud man, so I am not complaining to the landlord or anyone else.
Three weeks ago the ceiling fell in; I am going to correct it. The stairway also collapsed and my son broke his leg - termites had eaten away the steps. I had a contract with the security guard to increase his pay but the funds are not available, nor can I increase the helper's or the gardener's pay.
They all relented
I knew that they would understand so I told them that if I increased their pay, I would have to send them home. They all relented.
A few days ago, I found a dozen boxes in the storeroom with Cuban light bulbs. Still, I am not complaining.
Whenever the landlord asks, I tell him everything is fine. I have my pride. I refuse to borrow money from anybody. All this I have endured, but what has really upset me is that the previous tenants have been telling the landlord that I am the one who destroyed the house, and as time goes by, the landlord is starting to believe him.
I have a feeling that the landlord would replace me with them if he got half a chance. Still, I refuse to complain or reveal secrets.
I am, etc.,
