That hijack drama

The Editor, Sir:

The news of the hijacked aeroplane at the Montego Bay Airport in Jamaica blared from a ZR radio (Barbados' version of our mini bus) on the Number six route. It caught me totally by surprise. "In Jamaica? It can't be?" I almost stepped out into the middle of the road in Bridgetown. The blaring sound of a car's horn brought me back to reality. Finally, it has happened in Jamaica!! And a Jamaican at that!

So many questions. Like, how, why, how come? Who is he really? To whom is he connected?

Undetected

It seems it was bound to happen one day, yet we are all living in denial. We have so many criminals, locally grown and imported ones too. Someone would try. It has happened. The lessons learned should be numerous!

Yet, I cannot help but think there was a 'great' lapse in security. How could he have passed through so many checkpoints undetected? Even to reach as far as on the aeroplane itself, with no less a weapon than a gun. Something is drastically wrong. Heads should roll - for more than one reason.

The reputation of the Sangster International Airport has taken a plunge. Again, we have gone in the bad books of so many more additional people. Heads should and must roll.

The argument that the fellow is of unsound mind raises more questions, because, how could a 'mad man' pass through security undetected, and board an aeroplane? I don't think he is mad, he must be brilliant with years of 'experience'.

We all await the report from the chief airport's security and managers of the airport, along with other chief technical personnel. We all want to know of the plans being put in place to prevent it from ever happening again.

I am, etc.,
