Davies denies keeping diplomatic passports

Former Finance Minister Dr Omar Davies says he surrendered diplomatic passports belonging to himself and his wife, Rose, on his departure from government in 2007.

Davies and his wife were named among a list of People's National Party (PNP) former government ministers and members of the Upper and Lower Houses of Parliament and their spouses who were still holders of diplomatic passports.

Ministerial privileges

The revelation was made a day after the PNP had charged that Daryl Vaz's display of a diplomatic passport at a press conference last Monday was an indication that he still enjoyed ministerial privileges.

In a correspondence sent to The Gleaner, former Financial Secretary Colin Bullock said he was handed the travel documents by Dr Davies and they were immediately given to the staff of the Office of the Financial Secretary (OFS) for surrender.

"To the best of my know-ledge, they were put in the secure documents safe of the OFS pending surrender. I am able to attest to these passports being surrendered by you (Dr Davies) at your earliest possible opportunity," Bullock said in the correspondence.

Revelation

Last Wednesday, following the revelation, PNP President Portia Simpson Miller, instructed all PNP members of parliament and former ministers with outstanding diplomatic passports to return them immediately to the clerk of the Houses of Parliament.

The Ministry of National Security also revealed last Thursday that the clerk of the Houses of Parliament was in the process of recalling all diplomatic and official pass-ports issued to former members of the Upper and Lower Houses.
