Sir Vivian Richards relaxes at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston during his interview with The Gleaner's Lifestyle Editor Barbara Ellington. Sir Viv, as he is affectionately known, is the spokesman for Johnnie Walker's responsible-drinking campaign and will travel the islands on the current tour by England of the West Indies.

He's a cricketer par excellence, and if you have never heard his name, you're probably an American to whom the game of cricket is alien. But in Caribbean and international circles, former West Indies captain and superb batsman, Sir Vivian Richards, is taking things a lot easier these days.

He resides in the land of his birth, Antigua, but takes time to travel, especially on behalf of Johnnie Walker for whom he is the face that promotes responsible drinking habits under their theme: "Know your boundaries."

He was lethal with a bat and ball, but these days, Sir Viv plays golf and is proud of his handicap of seven. He is also focused on building his luxury villas in the Picadilly area of the island. If you are familiar with Antigua, it's in the section close to where Eric Clapton has his famous retreat.

Tangible legacy

Richards put his cricket earnings to good use and invested heavily in property so as to have a tangible legacy for his four children. He is also involved in motivational speaking and doing charity work for children's organisations.

Richards tells Outlook how he spends his down time.
