The Wordsmith - The Olympic accents
published: Sunday | August 31, 2008

AP
Jamaica's Usain Bolt drops a few local dance moves to celebrate his win in the second-round race of the men's 100-metres at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, Friday, August 15.

  • The Olympic accents

We love Usain Bolt, and we don't want anyone to say anything bad about him. However, his losing handlers have to work with him on that phony American accent.

He and some of the other Olympians, like many others thrust into the spotlight, need to know that you can sound like a wonderful intelligent Jamaican without the American accent. Jamaica Olympics Association ... training needed. We don't want the detractors to start on Bolt.

  • Ptomaine Poison

With the recent preparations for Hurricane Gustav, The Wordsmith saw an advisory which mentioned how to treat canned meat to prevent 'Tumaine poison'. A little time, a little care, a little research and less of the 'I know it, so I don't need to check' would have made you see that even though the letter 'p' is silent, the word is spelt 'ptomaine'. Ptomaine refers to a group of toxic amino acids found in putrefying meat and vegetable matter.
