No signs of flooding in St Bess
published: Saturday | August 30, 2008

The roof of this building in Fairy Hill, Portland, was blown off by Gustav's heavy winds.

St Elizabeth:

Torrential rains and gusty winds were the only effects of Gustav in St Elizabeth as there were no signs of flooding in flood-prone areas.

On a visit to communities in Junction, Black River and Treasure Beach in the parish, the only evidence that a tropical storm had passed through were fallen trees that created single-lane traffic and rough seas that placed a damper on fishing activities.

Checks with the police in these areas revealed that no reports of flooding occurred in the respective areas. There were also no reported incidents of looting within the parish.

Meanwhile, the relatively small community of hotels in Treasure Beach, St Elizabeth, reported no major effects from the seventh tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane season.

According to communications officer at the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, Kerry Morris, seven shelters were opened in St Elizabeth and, up to press time, a total of 46 persons were at these shelters.
