SLOGAN, yesterday, completed back-to-back upset victories at Caymanas Park, attacking the leader IMMANUEL AND KATIE off the home turn to score a battling win over PRIME MINISTER in the 1400-metre LC McKenzie Memorial Trophy race for Overnight Allowance horses.
Sent off at 6-1, the identical odds he won at on May 24 when beating RANSOM MAN by seven lengths, the super-fit four-year-old colt made a decisive move off the home turn with jockey Richard Mitchell, challenging long-time leader IMMANUEL AND KATIE and the rail-running 3-2 favourite SMOOTH DUDE with PRIME MINISTER challenging four-wide.
Ridden out by Mitchell in the stretch run, SLOGAN disposed of IMMA-NUEL AND KATIE before holding the late charge of PRIME MINISTER, running on with Dane Nelson.
Rough day for punters
It was another rough day for punters hunting the Super-6 and big Pick-9 jackpot, which had a carryover of $13 million.
EXPLOSIVE PEAK, a 5-2 chance partnered by Trevor Simpson, closed strongly over the final half-furlong to nail RIGMAROLE stealing home in the 1000-metre round ninth race for Open Allowance runners.
EXPLOSIVE PEAK's victory over RIGMAROLE, upstaging the even-money favourite, SMOOTHABILITY, coupled with earlier upsets, knocked out all Super-6 bets, sending a carryover of $1.25 million to Wednesday's card.
Pick-9 players were also battered by earlier upsetters such as TRIPLE ACCOUNT in the fourth (7-1), RAMADA in the fifth (4-1) and PIECE A FOOT in the sixth (8-1) before ROAD BLOCK closed the day at 10-1.
The Pick-9 carryover to Wednesday stands at $16.1 million, sending punters back to the drawing board, and the bank, for yet another day.
Three wins
Champion jockey Omar Walker continued on his merry way to a second title, notching three wins, starting the day with back-to-back victories aboard champion trainer Wayne DaCosta's SUGAR'S IMAGE and WHILELMINA for Devon Vanriel.
He returned to push his season's tally to 73 wins with a stirring finish aboard THUNDER CLAP in the seventh for trainer Antonio Barker, outfinishing TOO HOT TO TROT with Oneil Mullings.
Shane Ellis, who is second in the jockeys', standings moved his count to 57, beating rivals with TRIPLE ACCOUNT at 1000 metres straight for trainer Gary Subratie.
Simpson had two winners on the programme, EXPLOSIVE PEAK and RAMADA in the fifth, moving to 32 wins in third place, still some way off Dane Nelson in second on 57 after his win in the third aboard ROYAL CHRIS.
