Taylor slams whirlwind 90 as Windies women win
published: Sunday | June 29, 2008

DUBLIN, Ireland (CMC):

Stafanie Taylor slammed a stroke-filled 90 as West Indies' women defeated Ireland by 75 runs in their Twenty20 International (T20I) Friday.

The 17-year-old right-hander slammed 12 fours and two sixes in a cameo from just 49 balls as West Indies, batting first after being sent in, racked up 184 for four from their allotted 20 overs.

In response, Ireland limped to 109 for seven as pacers Kirbyina Alexander (3-20) and Danielle Small (2-20), destroyed the innings. West Indies survived the loss of an early wicket to mount a furious onslaught on the Irish bowling, courtesy of two key partnerships.

The experienced Nadine George fell for one with the score on five, but Taylor and Juliana Nero, who hit 20 from 29 balls, added 55 for the second wicket in quick time.

When Nero departed, Taylor found a more than willing ally in Stacy-Ann King who smashed 52 from 34 balls, as they combined in a frenetic third wicket stand of 108.

King, like Taylor, also put the Irish bowlers to the sword, striking five sixes and three fours, to propel the scoring.

In Ireland's reply, they lost early wickets and never really recovered and only Cecelia Joyce with 41 from 40 balls, showed any resistance. West Indies will face Ireland today in the third one-day international of the three-match tour. They lead 1-0 after winning the first match on Tuesday, with the second rained out without a ball being bowled.

They will move on to The Netherlands next week for four ODIs and two T20Is.
