published: Saturday | June 7, 2008

Young Melissa McLean explains the concepts of her winning poster to Glenworth Francis, general manager of the Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union League.

LACOVIA, St Elizabeth:

Young Melissa McLean is a promising artist. The 12-year-old, who attends the Lacovia Primary School in St Elizabeth, last week, copped the Credit Union Treasure Chest Poster Competition with the winning poster, entitled, 'Find Treasure, Save with a Credit Union'.

Her prize of a Play Station 2 was awarded at a presentation ceremony at the Jamaica Cooperative Credit Union League last Friday.

Melissa was among 111 students from primary schools across the island who participated in the competition that ran for approximately three months. The students selected one of four themes on which they developed their concepts.

Second place

Six-year-old Portlander Janoya Grant, the top saver in the recently concluded Credit Union Treasure Chest Saving Competition, accepts a $10,000 cheque from Glenworth Francis, general manager of the Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union League.

The prize for second place went to Ramario Rowe, from Denbigh Primary School in Clarendon, and Huddoy Walters from the Port Antonio Primary in Portland earned third place.

The Jamaica Cooperative Credit Union League organises the competition while students are sponsored by various credit unions.

The main objective of the Treasure Chest Poster Competition is to expose children 10-12 years of age to the credit union concept of saving.

With that in mind, six-year-old Janoya Grant earned a $10,000 cash prize for being the top saver in the Credit Union Treasure Chest Saving Competition. Two thousand two hundred credit union youth savers entered the competition which amassed a gross savings of $8.5 million.
