The Editor, Sir:I watched an interview with youth advocate Lawman Lynch on CVM TV's Direct on Wednesday. It has rejuvenated my interest in helping to change Jamaica's current situation. I am truly pleased by the move made by the corporate youth group to address crime and violence. In this light, I am appealing to all youth groups in Jamaica to come together and make a valiant attempt at fighting this monster.
This can be achieved through the implementation of various social intervention programmes, as well as recommendations to the security authorities. More important, we would create an image of hope for the 'enslaved criminals' - many of whom are youths themselves. This initiative would help enlighten the murderers and potential ones that they can be as positive as we are and empower themselves to achieve success through legitimate means.
It is clear that the police force and criminals are perceived as great enemies. As a result, any social intervention drive will prove futile if it is to be undertaken solely by the police. This grave reality provides another important reason for us to make this effort. We would certainly not be perceived as enemies, but rather peers to the youths, and may just have a better chance at success.
Proposal
I am using this arena to propose to Mr Lynch and his forum, as well as all youth/social groups in Jamaica to join hands and let us make this significant and historic step. Many persons may feel that their community is safe from violence. I invite them to examine the crime statistics of Clarendon. I also live in an area where there has been fewer than five murders in my lifetime. However, I am quite cognisant that it may be only a matter of time before it becomes entrenched in violence.
I am etc,
