Doctor's advice: Am I gay?
published: Saturday | June 7, 2008

Q I am a male university student. Last week, I got involved in a 'foursome' in a dorm on the campus, with two girls and another guy. We all had a little too much to drink.

To be honest, Doctor, I really enjoyed having sex with the two girls, who are both very attractive. At one point, I was having a 'sexual connection' with both young ladies at once - which is something that I don't suppose I'll ever experience again.

But what is worrying me is this. At some stage during the night, when both girls had gone off to the bathroom, the other guy reached over and stroked my organ.

To my astonishment, I responded to his caress by getting an erection. Things didn't go very far, as the ladies soon returned.

However, the events of that night are swirling in my mind.

Be frank with me, Doc. Am I really gay?

A No, you're not. A highly sexed young man will get an erection if almost ANYTHING touches his penis. That is particularly likely to happen in the middle of the night, when he is sleepy and has had a little too much to drink.

The chances that you are homosexual seem remote to me. I cannot say the same about the other young man, who appears to have initiated this brief contact. Maybe you should steer clear of physical contact with him from now on.

I do hope that you were practising safe sex with the women. It's very easy to catch and pass on sexual infections, such as chlamydia. And it is really easy to get girls pregnant!

Be more careful in the future.

Q I am a 19-year-old woman with a huge problem. A couple of weeks ago I started taking the Pill.

But a few days later, my boyfriend told me that just before I began taking it he had discharged inside me.

This had me quite worried, because it means that when I first took the Pill I was possibly pregnant! And I understand that a pregnant person is not supposed to take oral contraceptives.

As soon as he told me this, I stopped taking the Pill. And now my boyfriend is asking me to do a pregnancy test!

I think that he deliberately tried to get me pregnant, because he wants kids. But I'm not ready right now. Do you think I am pregnant?

A No, I don't. These days, the normal way of start using the Pill is to begin on the first day of your period. So, presumably, you began taking it on the day your menses arrived.

Therefore, if your period was already there, it is most unlikely that you were pregnant!

Admittedly, odd things can happen with conception. So if there is still any doubt, do take a pregnancy test.

I am concerned that your boyfriend apparently wants to get you pregnant, whereas you, being only 19 and with your life before you, do NOT want to conceive.

This guy has already managed to get you to stop taking the Pill. If you stay together, there is quite a big chance he'll get you pregnant.

Do you really want to become pregnant at your age, or want to pursue a good career? The choice is yours.

Q Is there a 'best' Pill that a girl can take, which has fewer side effects than the others?

ANo, there is no 'best' Pill though, generally, a young woman should use oral contraceptives which contain the lowest dose possible.

However, women who are quite HEAVY should not go on very low-dose Pills, because the hormone content might be inadequate.

Any doc will advise you.

Q Doc, if you have unprotected sex with a girl, what are the chances that she will get pregnant?

AAbout one in 20. However, the risk is greater if you have sex around the fertile time of her cycle.

Q Whenever I play football, my knee keeps 'clicking'. Does this indicate arthritis?

A Most unlikely. But it is just possible that you have a cartilage problem. So please have the knee checked by a doctor.

Q Doc, I am 19 and still I haven't see my menses. Is this OK?

ANo, it is certainly NOT OK! The average age for starting the periods is between 12 and 14, so you are now a good five years 'late'.

I urge you to see a doc this week. He or she will examine you, check you for anaemia (which sometimes delays the start of the menses), and arrange hormone tests.

Q I am a young man and I have just realised that there seems to be only ONE testicle in my scrotum.

I am scared about this, because I believe I had two when I was much younger.

AThe likeliest thing is that one of the testicles has gone up into the little 'canal' which leads into the belly.

If that is the case, it should be repositioned by a surgeon soon. That is because a testicle that is jammed up in the canal is vulnerable to injury and can become diseased.

See a doctor soon.

Q Is it possible to convert a four-inch penis into an eight-inch one?

ANo, it isn't. But there would be no point in having an eight-inch one.

The average length, as I have explained in this column before, is about SIX inches when erect. Please bear in mind that many women do not like sizes larger than that because they cause discomfort, or even pain.
