EDITORIAL - Bad English
The country's English language woes are nothing new, but each year when Dr. Ralph Thompson reminds us of how atrocious the situation is through a careful analysis of passes in the subject at the first stage of external examinations for high school students, as he did in yesterday's Gleaner, it is still a shock.
We were ladies and gentlemen
Jamaica College students were gentlemen in my time. So, too were the boys at Kingston College, Munro, Wolmer's, Cornwall, St. George's and Calabar. We all had strict headmasters who did not hesitate to use the cane to welter our bottoms. St. Andrew High School girls were ladies then. (Neita)
Issue - Education system failing our children
The Editor, Sir: I read Dr. Ralph Thompson's analysis of the 2007 CSEC examination results, and I am truly amazed that Jamaica appears to be producing a nation of certified illiterate professionals who went to high school.
Leaders too silent on crime
The Editor, Sir: In response to the article 'Question politicians about increased guns' (Tuesday's Gleaner , December 11), I am amazed that in view of the high murder rates and violence in Jamaica over the past few months that I have not heard either the head of the Government or the Opposition spoken out in any substantive way on the crime and violence plaguing the country.
