Seven ways to lose weight in Jamaica
published: Sunday | November 4, 2007

  • 1. Hire yourself out as a day's worker for a month or two. In Jamaican households, this worker is often forbidden the use of most, if not all, machines. You will scrub, wash and clean by hand, removing dirt in all areas of the home by the hardest means possible.

  • 2. Fast twice weekly on behalf of those affected by rape and murder in the island.

  • 3. Sell your car and move to Portmore, the Sunshine City. Unless you are prepared to spend a great deal on taxis you will lose weight while walking great distances from your home to central services. Jog in place while spending long minutes waiting at the bus stop. Decide that you will only eat at home. You will leave too early and reach home too late to do this, except on weekends.

  • 4. Watch the evening news just before eating the largest meal of the day. It will reduce your appetite.

  • 5. Go on the road to collect lunch every day. You will pass several hundred beggars, one of whom will have certainly relieved you of it before you return to your desk.

  • 6. In the city, go walking in communities where it's a good bet that you will be moving at a fast pace to avoid rabid dogs and other hostile elements.

  • 7. Learn all the latest dancehall moves and commit yourself to attending sessions at least three times each week.
