THE ANNUAL pre-Derby 'Hall of Fame' race meet on Saturday, May 26 at Caymanas Park will once again feature the popular Walkathon over 200 metres straight to be contested by racing personnel in aid of charity.

In addition, the programme will mark the 12th running of the 3-y-o and up open allowance race for the Hall of Fame Stakes Trophy over 1200 metres.

It offers a total purse of $500,000 and, according to CTL racing secretary Denzil Miller Jr., the field will be pulled from a pool of 20 horses including MUSICAL MAESTRO, TOOT DI HOOT, PASSA PASSA, CLASSY BOY PETE, LA REINA and DIESEL. The Ren Gonzalves Memorial Cup over 2000 metres is the day's co-feature. Details for the meet, which kicks off the 'Hall of Fame' week of activities culminating with the Prelude to Derby awards dinner at the Jamaica Pegasus on Thursday, May 31, were outlined by representatives of the JRC and co-sponsor Caymanas Track Limited (CTL) at Tuesday's launch at the Jamaica Racing Commission, Winchester Road.

The Walk For Charity, or walkathon as it's better known, will be contested by select members of the JRC staff including chairman Rudolph Muir, along with others such as Owners' Association president Laurence Heffes and Grooms' Association president Paul Pancho, not to mention media personalities Ed Barnes, Maurice Foster, Rohan Daley and George Davis.

Approval has been given by the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission for CTL to conduct win, place and quinella betting on the walkathon.

Proceeds will as usual go to charity. This time the recipients will be Children First based on Monk Street in Spanish Town. The administrator, Vandrea Thompson, said Children First is a non-government organisation which caters to more than 400 children and young adults from ages 10 to 22.

Children first touching lives

She went on to point out that despite limited resources, Children First has been touching the lives of young people through social, educational and training programmes while empowering their parents and guardians to overcome poverty and enhance family life via successful skills training and small business projects.

Thompson said funding for Children First comes partially from UNICEF, USAID, Environmental Foundation of Jamaica and the Ministry of Health Global Fund.

In a brief address, JRC chairman Rudolph Muir extended thanks to the Trustees of the Hall of Fame who were present and introduced a new member, Noel Levy, who is a former commissioner of the JRC. Muir disclosed that there will be five new inductees this year - a jockey, horse, stallion, groom and a racing personality.

He pointed to the Hall of Fame building on the grounds of the JRC which was opened in March and was described as a "first-class project". He said the building was thoroughly renovated with an Audio/Vidio Room to boot. "We exist on very limited resources but we try to be proactive in what we do," said Muir, who also said that work was being undertaken by the JRC on a book tracing the history of horseracing in Jamaica.
