Birth control firststep to end poverty
published: Thursday | May 17, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

The first step to eliminating poverty is to control the population. China has a one-child policy and Jamaica should adopt a policy that limits its population according to what it as a country can support.

In a world where there are so many ways to prevent unwanted pregnancy, there are still irresponsible people having kids they cannot take care of, bringing them into this world and suffering with them. What becomes of most of these kids? We can look at Jamaica today and see the results of a generation blaming everyone and society itself, instead of their own mom and dad who made the choice to bring them into this world, without the will to provide or fight for a better life for them. These worthless parents are bringing these kids in this world to fight their fight for them, but the cycle will just continue.

The Government or society needs to regulate and monitor people who have proven to be irresponsible, both man and woman. For example, if a man has one child and chooses not to provide for his child, he should be prevented from having anymore whether through sterilisation or otherwise. The same standard should apply to women including counting pregnancies aborted.

The Government should provide all types of birth control available for free and if a woman gets pregnant and receives an abortion, she should be forced to take birth control or have her tubes cut until she is responsible enough to want and provide for that child. It's time we stop thinking about what we want and 'put the children first.'

I am, etc.,
