published: Thursday | May 17, 2007

Devon Evans, Gleaner Writer

Ocho Rios, St. Ann:

The Ministry of Education and Youth's region three office will be hosting the schools agricultural science and environmental competition and fair in St. Ann on Tuesday, May 22.

The event will be held on the grounds of the York Castle High School in Brown's Town under the theme: "Youth breaking barriers through agriculture".

A majority of the over 100 schools in region three are expected to take part in this year's competition and fair.

The event will feature displays, farm and garden competition, agricultural science competition, practical agricultural skills demonstration and the award of a champion boy and girl.

Chairman of the organising committee, Neil Henry, said the aim of the fair is to inform the public about agriculture in our schools, as well as, to provide an opportunity for schools to showcase what they have been doing. He said students will also have a chance to improve their knowledge about the agricultural sector through the various companies and entities displaying their wares and work.

The competitions, which are divided into three categories namely: primary, lower secondary and upper secondary, are opened to all government and privately-run schools which fall under the supervision of the Ministry's regions two and three offices.
