How much GCT do consumers pay?

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE payment of GCT in Jamaica is a percentage of the cost of almost all goods consumed.

My problem, however, is to understand that if the importer pays GCT the distributor pays GCT. The wholesaler pays GCT and the retailer pays GCT. What is the final GCT paid by the consumer?

We will never know what is the total mark-up to the consumer on the goods he consumes. Maybe some knowledgeable person should take a look at this matter of this payment of GCT and make an official statement.

My understanding is that most imported goods now cost between 10 and 20 times more than 10-15 years ago. Most imported foods are costing between 10-40 times more than 10-15 years ago.

Someone will have to come to the rescue of the masses who are mostly unemployed and if they are employed are certainly not earning much more than 10 years ago.

I am, etc.,
