SANTA CLARA, California (CMC):
Jamaica-born forwards Ryan Johnson and Jeff Cunningham both struck goals but failed to get wins with their teams in US Major League Soccer (MLS) on Saturday night. Johnson netted for San Jose Earthquakes in a 1-1 draw with Colorado Rapids, while Cunningham's second-half strike failed to prevent FC Dallas from going down 3-2 to Kansas City Wizards.
England win
DURHAM, England (AP):
Graeme Swann took 5-28 as England bowled Australia out for 176 and won by four wickets yesterday to avoid being the first side to lose a one-day international series 7-0. Although Australia won the series 6-1, England were spurred by an opening stand of 106 between Andrew Strauss and Joe Denly and will go to the Champions Trophy in South Africa later this week on a winning note. Despite a mini collapse to 141-5, England reached the target with 10 overs to spare.
Although Ricky Ponting made 53 to become the third-highest one-day scorer of all time, Australia had no real answer to the off spin of Swann, who also caught opened Shane Watson with no runs on the board. Michael Hussey contributed 49 and Michael Clarke 38 for Australia.
SA chief under fire
JOHANNESBURG (AP):
Political parties yesterday backed the government's demand for the country's top athletics official to be axed after he admitted to lying about gender tests conducted on runner Caster Semenya. Athletics South Africa president Leonard Chuene apologised Saturday, saying he had lied to protect the 18-year-old's privacy. The sports ministry called on the ASA to fire Chuene.
