Homesters Sporting Central showed no mercy in their Clarendon derby with newcomers Humble Lions, easily providing a rude welcome with a 3-0 win at Brancourt yesterday.
The win, which helped craft Sporting Central's best start to a season, followed up their midweek 2-0 away effort at Arnett Gardens. They remain unbeaten after four matches, occupying third place on eight points. It was also the third straight game that new goalkeeper Jacomena Barrett kept a clean sheet, the only blemish coming late in the season-opener against Harbour View.
Goal-poaching skills
Francois Swaby again showed his goal-poaching skills, scoring his third goal of the season in the 37th minute to end the first half 1-0.
Sporting Central were largely fluent, leaving the visitors to chase the action while defending hurriedly. The next two strikes typified Humble Lions' peril - the first coming in the 70th - an own goal credited to Jermaine Christian, as defender Phillip Fearon got a wicked slice on the ball attempting a clearance that only put it out of the reach of goalkeeper Damion Crooks.
Sporting's midfield general Jevaughn Sterling then easily scored from the penalty spot in the 78th minute.
Humble Lions' coach, Christopher Bender, admitted his team was second best and blamed his team's lack of fight on the inexperience of matching the intensity shown against Portmore last Wednesday in four days.
He said in his post-game interview: "I thought we were second best from start to finish.
"My team was lethargic and it's probably not being used to playing two games in four days," he noted of the premier league newcomers.
Sorting's Donovan Duckie, who took over the reins from Christopher Dawes, was not overjoyed, saying the win mainly set a good stage to play his "good friend Lenny (Lenworth Hyde Sr)" in the next game against defending champions Tivoli Gardens.
Both Duckie and Hyde were the coaches of the national under-20 men's team last year.
