Louise Bennett-Coverley - Author SANGSTER'S BOOK stores has made available copies of four books written by Jamaica's matriarch of comedy, Dr. the Hon. Louise Bennett-Coverley (Miss Lou), to coincide with her return to the island. The four: Jamaica Labrish, Auntie Roachy Seh, Selected Poems and Anancy and Miss Lou, were reprinted this year. Published in 1966, Jamaica Labrish was the first book on Miss Lou's work. The book, which has been reprinted eight times before, highlights the Jamaican dialect and relates to the post independence period. Auntie Roachy Seh is the first published collection of Miss Lou's Views, a radio programme aired in Jamaica between 1965 and 1982. It points to issues relating to race, gender, the Jamaican dialect and folk culture and Jamaicans' attitudes towards life and work. Selected Poems is a collection of Miss Lou's favourite poems. The book, launched in 1982, was the third for Louise Bennett. Anancy
and Miss Lou, an 82-page publication, retells 31 stories which have become
a part of the Jamaican theatre over the years. The book also provides
the words and notes for thirteen popular cultural songs composed by Miss
Lou.
