Legal Aid Council to give free advice at fair in January

Published: Wednesday | December 30, 2009

The Legal Aid Council, an arm of the Ministry of Justice, will next month host its first Legal Aid Saturday, providing free legal advice to Jamaicans from all walks of life.

The three-hour session will be held on January 23, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre, 36 Hope Road Kingston 10.

In explaining the rationale behind the staging of the event, Hugh Faulkner, executive director of the Legal Aid Council, said the event, which is the first of its kind in Jamaica, is aimed at improving access to justice for the citizens of Jamaica.

"This fits in well with the Ministry of Justice's transfor-mation agenda," Faulkner said. "The Legal Aid Council is seeking to educate the public about the work of the council. We are targeting persons who may find it difficult to afford the full cost of consultation."

He added: "We are not promising to solve all legal problems but people can understand how the law affects their particular cases and be directed, as to the steps they may take."

There will be a brief opening ceremony at 10:30 a.m.

Faulkner is urging attorneys to register early for participation in the event.

Legal disciplines to be covered include some of the following:

Personal injury

Employment

Property

Intestacy/Probate/Letters of Administration

Landlord/Tenant

Divorce

Maintenance

Criminal Matters

Intellectual Property
