ALBANY, New York (AP):
The New York Racing Association (NYRA) said Monday it's facing a cash crunch that could threaten the Belmont Stakes and thoroughbred horse racing's Triple Crown because the state government still hasn't approved video slot machines at the Aqueduct racetrack. NYRA president Charlie Hayward said that, unless state lawmakers agree to allow video slots soon at Aqueduct, the NYRA may need another $30 million bailout from the state to save the racing season at Belmont, which includes the final leg of the Triple Crown.

Guillen, Narine impress
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):
Batsman Justin Guillen and off-spinner Sunil Narine continued Monday to press diligently for spots on Trinidad and Tobago's team for the forthcoming West Indies first-class season with strong trial match performances. On the first day of a two-day T&T Cricket Board trial match, Guillen struck a fine 52 to lead Amit Jaggernauth's XI to a modest 245 all out in 70 overs against Rayad Emrit's XI at the National Cricket Centre in Couva. Narine bagged a five-wicket haul for Emrit's side.
Guillen received good support from Mario Belcon (43) and Imran Khan (38). He had scores of 90 not out and 76 in the previous trial games.
Narine, who had a match-haul of 11 for 109 in the four-day game last weekend, grabbed five for 24 off 12 overs. In reply, Emrit's XI closed on 19 without loss.
Baptiste trial
PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):
Trinidadian national striker Kerry Baptiste will make his bid for a permanent contract at English League Championship side, Ipswich Town, when he embarks on a one-week trial there early next year. The east England side have expressed an interest in signing the 29-year-old on loan and he will hope to impress the staff there when he puts his talents on show during the first week of January.
Donovan permit
LIVERPOOL, England (AP):
Landon Donovan has been given the work permit he needs to play in Britain during his loan at Premier League club Everton. The Los Angeles Galaxy player easily met the criteria for the permit, because he has played 120 times for the United States and has captained his country. The permit was granted at a hearing yesterday and the midfielder is free to begin his 2-1/2-month loan from Major League Soccer as planned on January 2.
Ref suspended

The German football federation says it has suspended an assistant referee during an investigation into whether he may have participated in match-fixing. The federation said yesterday that Cetin Sevinc is being investigated in Bochum for possible game manipulations. The 27-year-old Sevinc has helped referee games in Germany's second division and lower leagues this season.
