Dangerous police practice

Published: Saturday | December 19, 2009

The Editor, Sir:

Something needs to be done about the practice of letting traffic out of the premises of the commissioner of police's office on Old Hope Road. The standard practice is for the policeman on gate duty to step suddenly out into traffic without warning, without safety vest, etc, and force the unsuspecting motorists to stop suddenly, or risk running him/her over.

On many occasions, accidents have been reported as drivers run into the back of vehicles as a result of this sudden stop by the policeman.

If it is indeed an emergency for drivers exiting the commissioner's office, breaking the law by turning right down Old Hope Road, crossing the unbroken white line, then maybe it is time to install an emergency stop light, as is used in other countries at similar facilities, as well as fire stations, emergency medical facilities, etc.

The lights are easily seen, and would facilitate safe stopping of the traffic, without potential loss of life or property.

I am, etc.,
