August Town's coach Calvert Fitzgerald has become the Digicel Premier League's first coaching casualty, after he was relieved of his duties by the club's management yesterday.

Having managed only 12 points from 17 games this season, August Town are currently at the bottom of the standings.

Former national player Paul Young will replace Fitzgerald, Marlon Small, general manager of the St Andrew based-team, said.

"We are trying to get the thing back on track. The coach (Young) will be signing on this evening (yesterday)," said Small.

August Town's latest result was a 2-2 draw at home against Village United, where they conceded an added time goal for the third consecutive game.

"I wouldn't say fire, we just came to an amicable agreement in terms of him going his way and we going our way," Small said. "I think he (Fitzgerald) is probably just frustrated in terms of what is happening ... we have been stuck at the bottom of the table from the competition started and the players are not responding to him as how he would have liked them to. There is a sort of disconnect between the coach and the players, in a sense. Not totally the coach's fault, but at the end of the day we have to think about the team so if something is not going right we have to try and fix it," he added.

Young, who arrived in the island last night, will not be in charge in their match against Arnett Gardens this Sunday.

"The assistant coach and myself will be running the team this weekend, and then Mr Young probably will take over for the next game because he has to get acclimatised and familiarised," Small said.

Transfer window

August Town are also anxiously waiting for the opening of the January transfer window, as they will be seeking to sign seven new players.

"It has been signed off on but they will still be representing their clubs until the end of the month. Approximately three of them are high-profile players; some former players will be returning home, plus additional players," Small informed. "Basically, it is like a brand new season. As of Sunday we will be doing everything possible to get it going all over again," he added.
