The streets of downtown Kingston were buzzing with activity yesterday as shoppers hurried to take advantage of massive discounts during the 'Christmas in the City, Downtown Comes Alive' shopping extravaganza.

It was difficult to move freely on the streets, as thousands of shoppers moved from store to store in an unusual Wednesday crowd. Stores in the town usually close for the day at noon on a Wednesday.

Due to the rush, some stores, including Bashco, had to regulate the number of shoppers they admitted at any one time.

Owner of Ammar's, Michael Ammar, said business was unusually successful for a Wednesday.

Pleased with turnout

Ammar said he was pleased with the reception from the customers as well as the level of security provided by the police.

Even the vendors, who were giving big discounts, were upbeat about the event.

Junior, a shoe vendor on King Street, said sales improved, as shoppers were eager to take advantage of the huge discounts.

Minister of National Security Dwight Nelson and Justice Minister Dorothy Lightbourne were among public personalities who also got involved in the spectacular activities.

"Just looking at the people, looking at the enthusiasm among the crowd, it is really something that I have not seen since I was a boy, so it's very refreshing," Nelson said.

Scotiabank, the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation, Jamaica Chamber of Commerce, the Kingston City Centre Improvement Company and The Gleaner sponsored the event.
