During the festive season, most persons are busier than usual with shopping and numerous social activities. Unfortunately, getting busy also applies to criminals during this time. As we become more preoccupied with our daily activities, it is imperative that we ensure that there is an ever-present sense of awareness. Most 'criminals' will seize the opportunity to strike when we least expect it.

However, these elements can, for the most part, be predictable in their unpredictability. We can be certain that they will almost always strike when they perceive us to be easy targets, or offer little resistance. Our goal, therefore, is to be armed with the correct mindset: prepared with how to react in certain situations, to make ourselves as equally unpredictable in our movements and routines.

Sophisticated criminals

Security is a constantly evolving industry. As the challenges we face are not static, our solutions must be equally dynamic and proactive. Criminals today are getting more sophisticated in how they operate, and we must do likewise.

Educating yourself in a few simple ways, can reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim.

Here are a few tips in the right direction towards protecting our safety and that of our loved ones.

1) Be aware: This includes at all times and in all situations. Be especially aware when entering or exiting ATM locations, while driving (especially at stop lights, stop signs or in slow moving traffic), or when approaching your vehicle in a parking lot or on the streets. If you are leaving the airport, bank or shopping centre, check carefully to ensure you are not being followed.

2) Displaying Cash: As much as possible, avoid displaying large amounts of cash or valuables while in public. 'Bling' can be attractive, but too often it attracts unwanted elements. When driving, do not leave your purse/wallet, or packages in visible areas (such as on the passenger seat) as this makes you appear as an easy or 'soft' target.

3) Personal Details: While in public, avoid speaking loudly on your cellphones as important personal details intended for your family or friends on the other end, can be used by an attentive individual with less-than-honourable intentions.

4) Social Networking: As social networking sites such as Facebook become more popular, emerging trends show they are becoming more popular with criminals too! Avoid posting personal details (such as your specific whereabouts) as this information in the wrong hands could greatly jeopardise your safety.

5) Avoid routine: This is sometimes easier said than done, but even a slight route change or time variation, can greatly enhance your security.

6) Security Systems: Electronic security systems such as vehicle-tracking devices or panic/burglar alarm systems, are important components to complement your security and peace of mind. Many of these are not as expensive as you may think. Check around; you may be pleasantly surprised!

Remembering these simple tips could save your life and reduce the likelihood of you becoming a victim of crime. We will explore some other tips in the coming weeks. Remember that a SAFE Christmas is a Merry Christmas!
