Henry to announce plans for Corporate Area bus routes

Minister of Transport Mike Henry is slated to announce his ministry's plans to deal with the impending gap, which will be created by the withdrawal of the Ezroy Millwood-led National Transport Co-operative Society (NTCS), from the Metropolitan Kingston Transport Region (KMTR).

The NTCS, which supplies routes in Kingston, St Andrew and St Catherine, will wind down its operations on Wednesday, with the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) taking respon-sibility for operating or making arrangements for bus operations on a number of additional routes within the KMTR currently being serviced by the NTCS.

JUTC communications manager and ministry spokesman Reginald Allen told The Gleaner, Henry was off the island on the weekend and will speak to the issue after he returns.

"The matter is being addressed at the highest level and the relative decisions will be made," said Allen.

In the meantime, Super-intendent Radcliffe Lewis, head of the traffic division, told The Gleaner his unit was aware of the upcoming changes and was preparing for them.

Lookout for robots

While he expects the JUTC to fill the gap left by the NTCS, he said the police would be looking out for illegal taxi operators, who may see the changes as an advantage.

"We are going to be patrolling the area, not for 24 hours, but for the times that buses normally run and that is from 6 a.m. in the morning to 11 p.m. in the night, to make sure these routes are not overtaken by illegal robots," he said.
